Fort Wayne Takes Loss in Rubber Game at Lansing
LANSING, Mich. (April 23, 2015) – The TinCaps lost, 3-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts at Cooley Law School Stadium on Thursday night.
Center fielder Michael Gettys tripled and doubled, driving in a run and scoring another in the setback.
Fort Wayne (4-8) found itself playing from behind after Lansing shortstop Richard Urena hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI-single by catcher Danny Jansen added to the Lugnuts lead in the second. The home team went ahead 3-0 in the fourth courtesy of a Gunnar Heidt groundout.
Gettys put the TinCaps on the board in the fifth with his triple to drove home catcher Miguel Del Castillo, who had doubled. Later in the eighth, Gettys doubled and scored on a single from third baseman Duanel Jones.
Both sides struggled with runners in scoring position. Fort Wayne had eight hits, but went 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position, stranding six. Lansing (11-4) totaled nine hits only to go 2-for-15 with runners at second and third, leaving 12 on base.
Left-hander Payton Baskette tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief complemented by 2 scoreless innings by righty Wilson Santos. Starter Walker Lockett (L, 0-2) was charged with three runs over 3 2/3 frames. During Lockett’s 14 1/3 innings on the mound this season, the TinCaps have only scored three runs.
Conner Greene (W, 1-1) went five innings for the Lugnuts, while Alonzo Gonzalez (S, 1) followed with four frames for the save.
The TinCaps open a six-game homestand at Parkview Field on Friday with a 7:05 p.m. contest against the South Bend Cubs. Fort Wayne will send out left-hander Thomas Dorminy (0-2, 9.00).
