Trine University adds director to help launch Master of Physician Assistant Studies program
ANGOLA, Ind. (April 6, 2015) – Trine University has hired a director to help advance its emerging Master of Physician Assistant Studies program. The program is scheduled to begin in January 2017.
Timothy Barnard, a physician assistant with more than 20 years of experience, has joined Trine as program director.
“Timothy’s extensive physician assistant experience in the military and private sectors will be an asset to our developing program,” said Max Baumgartner, Ph.D., P.T., dean of the School of Health Sciences. “His well-rounded field experience and teaching background combine to make him an ideal program director.”
The 28-month Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MSAS) program will be offered at Trine’s Health Sciences Education Center, 1819 Carew St., Fort Wayne. The full-time graduate program will include academic and clinical skills and supervised clinical practice experiences at hospitals and clinics in the greater Fort Wayne area.
Barnard’s primary responsibilities include:
- Designing a practice-oriented curriculum;
- Leading the program accreditation process;
- Establishing collaborative relationships, including sites for experiential placements, within the healthcare community of Fort Wayne and the region;
- Leading the recruitment of prospective academic and clinical faculty.
Barnard, of Granger, Ind., earned a Master in Physician Assistant Studies from University of Nebraska, a Bachelor of Science in physician assistant studies from Medical College of Georgia and a Bachelor of Science in biology from State University of New York College at Cortland.
Most recently, he served as a physician assistant in general orthopedics at Mishawaka Orthopedics and Sports Medicine P.C. in Mishawaka and before that he worked in trauma orthopedics for two years. His responsibilities included initial evaluation/consultation and follow-up care for adults and pediatrics orthopedic issues, as well as, first assist responsibilities in the operating room. In 2006 he established Surgical Services of Northern Indiana, a first assist contracting company. Barnard started his career in 1993 in cardiothoracic surgery.
Since 1996, Barnard has been a physician assistant in the Indiana Army National Guard. He is currently a lieutenant colonel assigned to the 38th Combat Aviation Brigade as an aeromedical physician assistant. From 2003 to 2004 he was deployed to Djibouti, Africa as the senior medical officer for the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa and Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. From 2008 to 2009, Barnard was deployed again to Kuwait. This time he was responsible for the medical well-being of all aviation personnel in Kuwait and the southern third of Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
During his career , Barnard’s positions have included cardiothoracic surgery, general orthopedics and orthopedic trauma and serving as a consultant to Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. He has also taught biology to U.S. military personnel while deployed to the Middle East, for the University of Maryland University College, headquartered in Europe.
At Trine, Barnard will also teach and engage in scholarship and service when the program begins in January 2017.
Applications will open in September 2015; students may apply through Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistants, https://portal.caspaonline.org/. Professionals and students who already hold a bachelor degree may apply to enter the program to earn a master degree.High-achieving students may be eligible to enter the program as freshmen and participate in the 3 + 2 program, in which the first year of the physician assistant program fulfills requirements for the final year of the bachelor’s degree. The student then continues for 16 more months to complete the master’s degrees.

Trine University anticipates matriculating its first class in January 2017, pending achieving Accreditation – Provisional status at the September 2016 ARC-PA meeting. Accreditation – Provisional is an accreditation status for a new PA program that, at the time of its initial accreditation review, demonstrated its preparedness to initiate a program in accordance with the accreditation Standards. In the event that provisional accreditation is not received, the program will not commence in January 2017 and tuition deposits will be refunded.
