IPFW Directors Awarded Online Teaching Certificates

(November 14, 2014) — Two leaders of the online learning program at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) recently were awarded teaching certificates from the Online Learning Consortium (OLC). IPFW Online Director Angela Williams and Associate Director Beth Iserman achieved the OLC Online Teaching Certificate after completing coursework that led them from the concept to the implementation of online learning effectiveness best practices.

The OLC Online Teaching Certificate program is for online faculty who wish to improve their online courses through the inclusion of active learning strategies and multimedia and social media components, along with stronger assessment practices. The program prepares educators to teach and improve online courses using the OLC pillars of quality in online education: learning effectiveness, scale, faculty and student satisfaction, and access. A unique feature of the certificate program is that expert mentors work individually with each certificate candidate to accomplish specific goals. The Online Learning Consortium formerly was known as The Sloan Consortium.

IPFW Online is a department within the Division of Continuing Studies that has helped IPFW develop and maintain one of the best online degree programs in the country, as ranked by U.S. News and World Report’ s list of the 2014 Best Online Bachelor’s Programs. IPFW tied for ninth place among all U.S. regionally-accredited, for-profit, private and public institutions that grant bachelor’s degrees through online programs.

IPFW currently offers three online Bachelor of Science degrees—in General Studies, Information Systems, and Nursing—along with an online master’s degree in nursing. A total of 220 unique online courses are offered per semester in a variety of general education and specialized subject areas. The IPFW Online department provides technical assistance and administrative support to the various academic departments in the delivery of these online courses and degree programs.
