(October 3, 2014) — The jihadist group known alternately as ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) and ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) continues making headlines with their attacks in Iraq and Syria, as well as their executions of Western hostages.

On Monday, October 6, a panel of policy scholars will examine the group, its motivations, and how it may affect the future of the region and the United States.

The panel, titled “Understanding ISIS/ISIL: The Implications for the Middle East & the United States,” will take place at 3:00pm in Neff Hall, room 101.

Presenters will include Douglas Ollivant, of The New America Foundation and former National Security Council Director for Iraq in the Bush and Obama administrations; James Lutz, professor and chair of political science and nationally-known scholar on terrorism; and James Toole, associate professor of political science, who was on the ground in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey studying the Syrian refugee crisis earlier this year.

The session is sponsored by the Department of Political Science, Arabic Language & Cultural Studies in the Department of International Language and Cultural, University Democrats, and College Republicans.

The event is free and open to the public.
