Indiana Criminal Justice Association Names Surbeck 2014 Judge of the Year
(October 2, 2014) – Allen Superior Court Judge John F. Surbeck has been named 2014 Judge of the Year by the Indiana Criminal Justice Association (ICJA).
Judge Surbeck received the honor Wednesday during the ICJA’s fall conference in Indianapolis. ICJA membership includes professionals from throughout the criminal justice field, including parole and probation programs, correctional facilities, schools, law enforcement agencies and the judiciary.
“The ICJA represents the professionals who make Indiana’s criminal justice system function with such distinction,” said Judge Surbeck. “This honor is unique and special to me because it represents the opinions of those who know best – the rank-and-file of our profession.”
ICJA’s Judge of the Year award is meant to recognize an Indiana Judge who has demonstrated a high level of dedication, professionalism and leadership in the administration and development of efficient and effective court services.
Judge Surbeck has served as Judge in Allen Superior Court’s Criminal Division since 1988. He was responsible for the design and launch of Superior Court’s highly successful Reentry Court program, which provides supervision of offenders returning from the Indiana Department of Corrections with the goal of reducing recidivism and enhancing the safety of the community. Judge Surbeck’s previous honors include the 2013 William Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence.
