According to Kroger Central Division President Jeff Burt, “Strong support of education is an important responsibility for every corporate citizen. Education is one of five national priorities for The Kroger Co. and this operating division of Kroger places special emphasis on supporting K-12 education. That is why in February 2014 we launched another $4.9 million, three-year K-12 education strategy. Kroger associates are involved in and concerned about their children’s education. Our decision to strengthen historical support of education going back more than 100 years is motivated by two priorities; improving the educational opportunities available to our children and building the best possible workforce for our future. We are pleased that one component of our strategy includes scholarships for 24 children of Kroger Central Division associates each year, including Mitchell. We are very proud of Mitchell’s academic accomplishments and other achievements and it is our privilege to honor him in this way.”

A company-wide program of The Kroger Co. Foundation, Kroger Scholars is open to children of associates in the Kroger family of stores who have two years of service and work at least 1,000 hours per year. For the 2014-2015 school year 366 students across the nation will receive awards. Funds can be used at any accredited two or four-year college, university or vocational program. Scholarship America, a leading national scholarship manager, selected recipients based on a broad range of criteria including scholastic performance, work experience, extra-curricular and volunteer activities and a personal statement of goals and aspirations. Financial need was not a consideration. No one from The Kroger Co. participated in the selection process.
