Mayor Henry dubs today HU/OT Day in Fort Wayne
(August 25, 2014) — Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry has declared today as Huntington University Occupational Therapy Day. The proclamation states in part:
- “Whereas Huntington University has launched Fort Wayne’s first doctoral program in occupational therapy and recruited 32 high-quality students to study, work and live in the community.
- Whereas occupational therapists have contributed greatly to the quality of life of Fort Wayne residents, and their influence will only expand with Huntington University’s new doctoral program.
- Whereas the launch of Huntington University’s doctoral program in occupational therapy showcases the strength of community collaborations with Parkview Health, the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership and the City of Fort Wayne.”
Today, the 32 entry-level doctorate in occupational therapy students are beginning coursework at the newly renovated Parkview Randallia campus at 1819 Carew St. The former Fort Wayne Cardiology building on the Randallia campus was redesigned from exam rooms to classrooms and specialty laboratory spaces, housing new technology for developing skills and knowledge for future healthcare practitioners.
Students have moved from as far away as California, Texas and New Jersey to attend Huntington’s program. Huntington’s entry-level doctorate is one of the first 14 programs of its kind in the United States. This program is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is in step two of three for the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). The third step is in process with final application materials due in April 2015.
