20th Omnibus Lecture Series Features Historian, Scientist, and Entertainer

(August 13, 2014) — Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) welcomes three amazing speakers for the 20th season of the Omnibus Lecture Series, which takes place during IPFW’s 50th Celebration.

Doris Kearns Goodwin, presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author

“Leadership Lessons of History: Doris Kearns Goodwin on the American Presidents”

September 23, 2014 (tickets available starting Tuesday, September 2)

Pulitzer Prize-winning author and world-renowned presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin has authored six New York Times bestsellers. Her acclaimed Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln was the basis for Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award-winning film Lincoln. She is a frequent guest and commentator on major news programming and has appeared on Meet the Press, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and The Colbert Report, in addition to documentaries on PBS and the History Channel. She has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Charles Frankel Prize from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Lincoln Prize.

 


 

Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist, TV host, and author

“This Just In: Latest Discoveries in the Universe”

Astrophysicist, television host, and superhero of the sciences Neil deGrasse Tyson will come out of the cosmos for an evening on IPFW’s campus this fall. Tyson is a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History and the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space. He is the former host of PBS’s NOVA ScienceNow and current host of Cosmos. In addition to authoring dozens of professional publications, Tyson is a New York Times bestselling author and frequent guest on major news programming. A New York native, Tyson has received 18 honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award given by NASA to a citizen.

 


 
Garrison Keillor, author, radio host, and humorist

“An Evening with Garrison Keillor”

Each week, more than 17 million listeners tune in to Garrison Keillor, host of public radio’s live variety show A Prairie Home Companion. In 2006, he starred in a film adaptation of A Prairie Home Companion alongside Meryl Streep, Woody Harrelson, and others. His talents have been recognized with numerous awards, including a Grammy for his recording of Lake Wobegon Days and an induction into the Radio Hall of Fame at Chicago’s Museum of Broadcast Communications in 1994. Keillor is the author of many books, including Lake Wobegon Days, Wobegon Boy, and Liberty: A Lake Wobegon Novel. Keillor has taken A Prairie Home Companion on the road for tour broadcasts all across America.

 

The Omnibus Lecture Series is dedicated to presenting diverse ideas through respected speakers to northeast Indiana.

The Omnibus Lecture Series has been supported by the English Bonter Mitchell Foundation since 1995. The 2014-15 season media sponsors are WANE-TV NewsChannel 15 and 89.1 WBOI NPR news and diverse music.

Free tickets are required for all Omnibus Lectures. Tickets will be available three weeks prior to each event and may be obtained:

  • IN PERSON at the Larson Ticket Office in the Gates Athletics Center, 12:30-6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
  • ONLINE through the box office website (with a $1 convenience fee to cover order processing costs)
  • DAY OF EVENT in the Rhinehart Music Center one hour before the lecture (if seats are still available)

Each lecture takes place in The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center’s 1,600-seat Auer Performance Hall on the IPFW campus. Doors open one hour before the each lecture. Campus parking is free and convenient. The 1,000-space parking garage 3 is located in the Fine Arts Plaza to serve Omnibus audiences. Patrons should arrive early to allow plenty of time for traffic and parking, as the series and other events on campus may draw large crowds.
