TinCaps Blank Midwest League’s Best

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (August 2 2014) – For the fourth time in 15 games, the TinCaps shut out their opponent on Saturday night. The latest victim? The team with the Midwest League Eastern Division’s best record, the West Michigan Whitecaps. Jimmi Brasoban, Eric Yardley, and Ryan Butler teamed for the shutout while Nick Schulz provided the power in a 6-0 victory.

Brasoban, 20, has been outstanding for the TinCaps of late. After he had a 14.29 ERA through the first three weeks of the season and was transferred to Short-Season A Eugene, the right-hander has been dominant over the last three weeks. On this night, the native of the Dominican Republic scattered eight hits. While walks plagued Brasoban (2-4) in the past, he issued no free passes. He also didn’t strike out a batter. Of his 73 pitches, 49 were strikes.

Yardley relieved Brasoban for the seventh and eighth and retired all six batters he faced. The side-armer only needed four pitches to get through the eighth.

Butler finished the game in the bottom of the ninth. He recorded the team’s only strikeout of the game.
Offensively, Fort Wayne got on the board in the top of the third when Schulz cranked his second home run of the season. It was a two-run shot to left-center that scored Henry Charles, who led the inning off against Jon Maciel (5-5) with a single.

The TinCaps added to their lead with three runs in the sixth as both Ryan Miller and Schulz provided two-out RBI singles to make it a 5-0 game. Trea Turner hit an RBI double in the eighth to extend the lead to 6-0.

Fort Wayne (18-23, 48-62) now has seven shutout wins on the season. Saturday was the club’s second shutout against West Michigan (27-14, 68-43). The TinCaps have won 13 of their last 20 games, including three of five on their current road trip.

With Cody Hebner on the mound, Fort Wayne looks to take the rubber match of its three-game series against the Whitecaps Sunday afternoon at 1:00. Kevin Ziomek counters for West Michigan. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
