American Theatre Organ Society presents: The General
At the Embassy Theatre, Monday, July 7, 2014, at 7 pm
(June 24, 2014) – The American Theatre Organ Society (ATOS) will present the Buster Keaton classic movie “The General” as part of its 2014 annual national convention. This black & white silent film classic will be accompanied by Walt Strony on the Grande Page organ. In addition to providing entertainment to hundreds of ATOS conference attendees, the July 7, 7 p.m., event is free and open to the public. The General is about train engineer Johnnie Gray (Keaton) who has two loves in his life: Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack) and his locomotive, The General. This film ends with a chase scene and train crash that some say is the single most expensive shot ever in a silent film. Considered by critics as one of the greatest films ever made, The General was ranked #18 by the American Film Institute list of the 100 best American movies of all time.
The Grande Page organ, thanks to the talents of nationally acclaimed organist Walt Strony, will provide background music and appropriate sound effects to this silent film. The Grande Page was the catalyst for saving the Embassy Theatre in the 1970s when a local group of organ enthusiasts drove the fundraising efforts to save the Embassy and specifically the organ. There are more than 1,300 pipes built into the Embassy for the Grande Page.
