TinCaps Set Attendance Record on Social Media Night

(June 27, 2014) – The TinCaps set a new single game attendance record on Thursday night, as 9,015 fans packed Parkview Field. Unfortunately for the standing-room only sellout crowd, they saw Fort Wayne fall to Dayton, 5-0, in the finale of a three-game series. The loss snaps the TinCaps’ three-game winning streak.

On Social Media Night, with Fort Wayne wearing jerseys featuring the Twitter handles of more than 11,000 @TinCaps followers, there wasn’t much to “like” from an offensive standpoint for either side early on. Dayton (2-5, 38-37) starter Dan Langfield — in his first start of the season after 10 relief appearances — blanked the TinCaps for four frames. Meanwhile, Fort Wayne (4-3, 34-43) starter Kyle Lloyd was equally impressive.

The Dragons, however, broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. The visitors put up three runs on four hits, including an RBI double by Jon Matthews that made it 1-0. Dayton added insurance an insurance in the seventh and eighth, respectively.

Lloyd (2-2) left after five innings with three runs allowed on seven hits, no walks, and three strikeouts. On the other side, Tony Amezcua (1-2) picked up the win after working three innings of relief with just one hit allowed.

The TinCaps put up a whopping 19 runs on 33 hits in the first two games of the series — both wins — but could muster a mere four hits Thursday. Shortstop Josh VanMeter collected two of them. It was only the second time in 76 games that Fort Wayne went without a run.

Thursday’s game was the 10th sellout of the season at Parkview Field. Last Thursday night the ballpark set a single event attendance mark with a crowd of 13,500 to see a Florida Georgia Line and Nelly concert. The previous high for a baseball game was 8,780, which occurred on the Fourth of July in 2013 against South Bend.

Coincidentally, Fort Wayne visits South Bend Friday night at South Bend for the start of a four-game set. Ronald Herrera is scheduled to start for the TinCaps against the Silver Hawks’ Blake Perry. The 7:35 game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
