Hot Rods sneak past TinCaps

Bowling Green, KY (June 9, 2014) – In the finale of a three-game series, the Bowling Green Hot Rods had the upper hand at Bowling Green Ballpark. The Tampa Bay affiliate came away with a 2-1 win Monday night to win the series, two games to one.

In a pitchers’ duel between Walker Weickel of the TinCaps and Jaime Schultz of the Hot Rods, Bowling Green (30-33) scored first. Johnny Field hit a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth, and two batters later Granden Goetzman tripled him home.

Fort Wayne (28-35) was held quiet over the first six innings against Schultz (2-0). He fanned eight and surrendered only three hits and three walks in his six innings. He departed in favor of southpaw Stone Speer. Franmil Reyes, pitch-hitting for Luis Tejada, hit a one-out double against Speer, and Josh VanMeter then tattooed a line drive to left field. Granden Goetzman dropped the ball, allowing Reyes to score. That tied the game, 1-1, but it didn’t stay even for long.

Weickel (1-7) ventured into the seventh for the first time this year, but did not record an out in the inning. Catcher Oscar Hernandez led off with a triple, and Weickel then walked Ty Young, leaving runners at first and third for Eric Yardley. The submarining righty got a groundout immediately upon coming in, but Alexander Simone hit a frozen rope to center, caught by Mallex Smith, getting Hernandez home and putting Bowling Green in the lead for good.

The TinCaps threatened in the ninth against Speer (4-1), as Reyes had a two-out single and VanMeter drew a walk, but Ronnie Richardson struck out to end the game.

The TinCaps now return home to close out their first-half schedule with a six-game homestand. The Lansing Lugnuts come to town for the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night. The scheduled starters are Erik Cabrera for Fort Wayne and Jeremy Gabryszwksi for the Lugnuts. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on ESPN Radio 1380 and TheFanIndiana.com.
