TinCaps Offense Prevails in 14-9 Game

(May 26, 2014) – Two five-run innings would have been enough for Fort Wayne in Monday afternoon’s game against the Dayton Dragons, but the TinCaps added four more in a high-scoring, 14-9 win at Parkview Field. Six Fort Wayne players had multi-hit games and four drove in at least two runs as the TinCaps positioned themselves for a sweep for the second straight series.

Dustin Peterson, who has now driven in 10 runs in his last five games, was once again a catalyst for Fort Wayne. The 19-year-old third baseman knocked in four runs with a 3-for-5 day, and scored two runs. Peterson, hitting second, was sandwiched between Mallex Smith and Fernando Perez, and the trio combined to drive in eight runs, score seven, and collect seven hits.

The Fort Wayne (21-29) offensive came against Nick Travieso (5-2), Cincinnati’s first-round pick in 2012, who entered the day with a Midwest League-leading 1.60 ERA but saw it jump to 2.87 after his outing of 2 2/3 innings. The Dayton (27-22) starter allowed nine runs, eight earned, walked three, and did not strike out a batter. In his previous nine games, totaling 50 2/3 innings, he had never walked more than two in a single game, and had struck out at least three in each appearance.

TinCaps starter Coby Cowgill got nine runs of support during his 3 1/3 innings of work, but struggled to find the strike zone, throwing 46 of his 90 pitches for strikes. He allowed five runs, all earned, while walking three, as he failed to reach the fifth inning for his third straight start. Reliever Genison Reyes (2-0) notched his second win of the year with scoreless sixth and seventh innings.

The game lasted three hours, twenty-six minutes, setting a new season high for a nine-inning game.

The TinCaps will try to secure their fifth win in six-games, and a sweep of Dayton, in the series finale Tuesday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. with Walker Weickel on the hill for Fort Wayne and Daniel Wright getting the ball for Dayton. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380, TheFanFortWayne.com and the TuneIn radio app.
