Northeast Indiana’s role in global economy highlighted in new book

(May 19, 2014) – How could the widening of the Panama Canal lead to an expansion of Northeast Indiana’s rail service? And how could the growth of the middle class in countries around the world affect businesses in Northeast Indiana? John Sampson, president and CEO of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership, and Rob Marr, vice president of C&A Tool, explain in a new book called “Big Picture Economics: How to Navigate the New Global Economy.”

 

 

Written by prize-winning economist Joel Naroff and veteran journalist Ron Scherer, the book examines how consumers, businesses and governments use context to make decisions related to spending, investing and budgeting and how each group’s actions play into economies all around the world.

“One of the chapters in the book illustrates how changes around the globe can affect what happens in our hometowns,” said Scherer. “I am grateful to John Sampson and Rob Marr for helping to explain how changes taking place in the global economy are helping to shape the economic climate in Northeast Indiana.”

Sampson and Marr are featured in chapter 10, titled “The Panama Canal Widens and the Middle Class Grows in China-How Does That Affect Indiana?”

“Business leaders have to understand how events taking place around the world can have a direct impact on their companies. The book clearly shows that, and I appreciate the opportunity to share how C&A is primed to take advantage of opportunities to grow our business,” said Marr.

Northeast Indiana’s mention is a result of a media tour to New York City taken by the Partnership and Indiana Michigan Power to raise awareness of the positive business climate in Northeast Indiana. In addition to the interview with Scherer, interviews were also conducted with The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, FoxNews.com and The Guardian.

Marr and Sampson were joined on the media tour by Rob Cleveland, Manager – Economic & Business Development at Indiana Michigan Power, and Courtney Tritch, director of marketing at the Partnership.

“As ‘Big Picture Economics’ points out, our economy is not solely influenced by what’s going on around the state or even the country. As we work to transform Northeast Indiana into a top global competitor, we have to pay attention to what’s going on around the world and be prepared to adjust our regional visioning efforts to changing demands and competition for new business,” said Sampson.

This is the second time Northeast Indiana has been mentioned in a book in the past year. The Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership’s marketing efforts were also referenced and quoted in Harvard Professor Nathalie Laidler-Kylander’s book, “The Brand IDEA: Managing Nonprofit Brands with Integrity, Democracy and Affinity.”
