Fort Wayne winning streak ends in South Bend

South Bend, IN (May 15, 2014) – In the opener of a four-game series at Four Winds Field, the South Bend Silver Hawks defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps by a 5-4 final. Dustin Peterson cleared the bases with a two-out double in the ninth, but was thrown out at third to end the game, and Fort Wayne’s three-game winning streak.

Peterson came to the plate with a chance to tie the game, his team trailing, 5-1. He hit a Silvino Bracho pitch into the right-centerfield gap, scoring Jake Bauers, Henry Charles, and Chase Jensen, but was cut down trying to stretch a double into a triple, ending the game.

Fort Wayne (17-22) scored the game’s first run with just one base hit. Mallex Smith laid down a bunt single against starter Adam Miller in the first inning, stole second and third—raising his professional baseball-leading total to 28 steals—and scored on a Peterson groundout. The TinCaps’ bats went quiet for the majority of the game after that, though, as they did not have back-to-back base hits until a pair of two-out singles by Charles and Jensen in the seventh.

South Bend (22-17) starter Adam Miller left the game after just 1 2/3 innings due to what appeared to be a blister on his throwing hand. His replacement, Blayne Weller (2-2), held the TinCaps to just two hits over the next 4 1/3 innings en route to a victory. Bracho notched the save, having entered the game with Peterson representing the tying run at the plate.

Meanwhile Walker Weickel (1-5), took the loss as he surrendered a career-high five walks in 4 2/3 frames. He threw two wild pitches, hit a batter, and allowed five runs (four earned), while striking out one. The Fort Wayne bullpen duo of Tony Rizzotti and Genison Reyes, who was activated off of the disabled list prior to the game, combined for 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Friday’s 7:35 first pitch in South Bend is scheduled to feature Adrian De Horta on the hill for Fort Wayne and Braden Shipley for South Bend. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
