TinCaps On The Field

Fernando Perez was named the San Diego Padres Minor League Defensive Player of the Month in April. He made only three errors during the month, despite playing three infield positions – first base (seven games), second (nine games) and third (five games). Offensively, just missed being named Hitter of the Month as well – batting .326 (30×92) with 15 runs, nine doubles, two homers and 18 RBI in 22 games. Named Midwest League Player of the Week during the month (week of 4/14)…20-year-old graduate of Otay Ranch, selected in the third round of the 2012 draft out of Central Arizona College…resides in Chula Vista.

Mallex Smith was named the San Diego Padres Minor League Baserunner of the Month in April. Centerfielder tied for third among all minor league players with 16 steals (22 attempts) in April (currently leads all of MiLB with 22 bags)…. was 21×95 with four doubles, two triples and five RBI for the month…scored 15 runs…walked 11 times…selected in the fifth round out of Santa Fe College (Fla.) in the 2012 draft…swiped 64 bases last year…turned 21 May 6.
