Barricaded suspect

On Sunday, 05/04/2014, at approximately 4:24 PM, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 4000 block of Oliver Street reference a disturbance involving a subject armed with a firearm.

Initial reports indicate a male and female inside the residence were involved in a physical altercation. When a roommate attempted to intervene, the male suspect displayed a firearm. As officers arrived on scene, three adult subjects exited the residence. The male suspect that was armed with the firearm refused to exit the residence. Officers made repeated attempts to make contact with the suspect via a loud speaker. The suspect refused to comply and voluntarily exit the residence.

At approximately 4:53 PM, the Emergency Services Team (EST) and Crisis Response Team (CRT) were called to assist reference a barricaded suspect that was armed with a firearm. Officers with the Crisis Response Team were able to make contact with the suspect and communicated to him via telephone. The suspect agreed to a surrender plan and agreed to voluntarily exit the residence. At approximately 7:43 PM, the suspect exited the residence. He complied with verbal commands from the Emergency Services Team members and was detained without incident. The suspect did not incur any injuries as a result of the standoff. The Emergency Services Team cleared the interior of the residence and no other subjects were located inside.

Nearby neighbors were evacuated from their homes for their safety during the three-and-a-half-hour standoff. In addition, several roads were temporarily closed for public safety. Smith Street, Oliver Street, and Bowser Avenue were all closed between Rudisill Blvd. and Baxter Street during the standoff. All roadways were reopened at 8:05 PM.

The suspect was transported to the Detective Bureau for an interview. Current criminal charges include Felony Domestic Battery and Strangulation. At the conclusion of the interview, Detectives will determine if additional criminal charges will be pursued.

This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
