Students Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday

(February 27, 2014) – Students throughout Fort Wayne Community Schools will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ 110th birthday by participating in Read Across America events.

Scheduled events include:

Friday, Feb. 28th

  • At Nebraska Elementary, 1525 Boone St., local veterans from the 122nd Air National Guard will visit throughout the day to read Dr. Seuss books to all the classrooms. The veterans will pass out small Dr. Seuss gifts to the students. At 3 p.m., the school will have a balloon launch. Students will write a goal to attach the balloon before releasing it.
  • Harrison Hill Elementary, 355 Cornell Circle, will honor Dr. Seuss by wearing red and white. Each class will also have a guest reader who will read “The Cat in the Hat.” Guest readers include: Fort Wayne Fire Chief Amy Biggs, Fort Wayne Police Captain Scott Berning, Kekionga Middle School Principal Jennifer Mable, Waynedale Elementary Principal Justin Arkkelin, representatives from Star Financial Bank, South Side High School students and FWCS administrators Kim Brooks, Natalie Brewer and John Key.
  • Waynedale Elementary, 7201 Elzey St., will have a pajama day and Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) at 10 a.m. Everyone in the building will stop what they are doing at 10 a.m. to read a book for a half hour. The celebration continues in the evening with a reading family night focused on making connections when reading followed by dinner and a movie.
  • At Bunche Montessori Early Childhood Center, 1111 Greene St., the PTA is hosting Reading Night Friday at 6 p.m. Activities include a book-swap table, making hats, bowties and wacky pictures, face painting, wacky snacks, a puppet show and reading.

Monday, March 3rd

  • Dr. Seuss will visit each classroom at Washington Center Elementary, 1936 W. Wallen Road, and give each child a book. Students will also celebrate by creating a school-wide graph of their favorite Dr. Seuss books, participating in a bookmark-decorating contest and reading with a partner.
  • At Weisser Park Elementary, 902 Colerick St., Rising Star volunteers will be guest readers in primary classrooms. The special guests will share Dr. Seuss books and promote literacy. Lunch is a special menu of green eggs and ham in honor of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday.
  • Towles Montessori, 420 E. Paulding Road, will celebrate Read Across America all week. Librarian Tony Diederich will be read “Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!” to the 6-9 cluster (first-third grades), and the 9-12 cluster (fourth-sixth grades) will watch a video of “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” featuring the voice of actor John Lithgow. There will be a Dr. Seuss display in the Media Center and a Dr. Seuss trivia contest throughout the week.

Wednesday, March 5th

  • Towles students and staff will continue their celebration of Theodor Geisel’s birthday by wearing crazy hats. Teachers will read a favorite Seuss book to their classes.

Friday, March 7th

  • At Croninger Elementary, 6700 Trier Road, the Cat in the Hat will visit students during lunch from 11:30 a.m.-12:40 p.m. He will read a book, interact with the students and visit a few classrooms to pass out small treats.
  • Brentwood Elementary, 3710 Stafford Dr., will kick off its Dr. Seuss celebration with crazy socks day in honor of the story “Fox in Socks.”

Monday, March 10th

  • Brentwood will continue its celebration throughout the week with students performing random acts of kindness. On March 10, guest readers will visit the school to read their favorite stories. Students who complete their reading logs prior to March 10 will receive a special cookie at lunch.
