Powerful storm system to impact region

Today’s weather story from the National Weather Service:

Powerful storm system to impact region

(February 20, 2014) – A powerful low pressure system will track into the region today and tonight. Rain and isolated thunderstorms, possibly beginning as a brief period of freezing rain, will continue to overspread the area this morning in advance of a warm front. Warmer air and rain are expected this afternoon and evening as the warm front moves through.

Significant snow melt is likely and this, along with the warmer air, will allow for areas of fog to form. Strong winds and a thin line of showers and isolated thunderstorms will pivot through this evening into the early overnight along a strong cold front. Rainfall totals will be from a half inch to 1 inch, although locally higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms.

A flood watch is in effect as this rainfall, combined with snowmelt and a frozen ground, may lead to flooding. It will turn cooler and windy behind the system on Friday and a wind advisory is in effect from this evening into Friday.
