INDOT Is Ready For More Winter Weather
INDOT is monitoring weather ahead of predicted wintry mix
(February 17, 2014) – A winter weather advisory has been issued for most of Northeast Indiana and the Indiana Department of Transportation’s (INDOT) yellow plow trucks are prepared. Current forecasts predict another round of snow, freezing rain and wintry mix across the region this afternoon through tonight.
A full callout of INDOT drivers report after noon today and will work until midnight, when a replacement shift is scheduled. INDOT continues to monitor developing forecasts, as well as its statewide network of road and bridge pavement sensors, to deploy the needed personnel, equipment and materials ahead of any predicted precipitation. INDOT’s top winter priority is to plow and treat its more than 30,000 lane miles of interstates, U.S. highways and state routes. Each plow route takes approximately 3 hours to complete with salt assisting in melting between passes.
As the storm moves across the state, it is expected to create difficult driving conditions, especially during the evening commute hours. INDOT asks drivers to adjust driving behaviors to the conditions encountered on the roadway and give snow plows room to operate. Don’t tailgate or try to pass as the roadway will be clearer behind the snow plow than in front of it.
Drivers are reminded to accelerate gradually, drive slowly, brake early and allow greater distance between you and other vehicles.
