Governor Pence Orders National Guard To Activate Highway Assistance Teams in Response to Severe Winter Storm

(January 5, 2014) – Governor Mike Pence has directed the Indiana National Guard to stage Highway Assistance Teams in response to the heavy snow and low temperatures forecasted across the state.

A total of 24 teams, consisting of 96 individuals, have been deployed across the state to assist in life saving and rescue operations. Each team has four individuals and two vehicles.

The Highway Assistance Teams perform a variety of tasks, including rescuing stranded motorists, moving individuals to shelters, and assisting local EMS in reaching individuals who need medical attention.

Armories deploying teams include Lebanon, Johnson County, Shelbyville, Indianapolis, Richmond, Brazil, Columbus, Seymour, Scottsburg, New Albany, and Terre Haute.

Needs will continue to be assessed as the storm moves through Indiana and additional resources will be deployed as necessary.
