City issues canine parvovirus alert for dog owners
(August 28, 2013) – Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control officials are reminding dog owners of the importance of vaccinating canines of all ages against parvovirus infection, a highly contagious viral disease that rapidly spreads among dogs and can result in the death of dogs. Puppies less than six months of age are at the highest risk.
Parvo disease is spread mainly through exposure to contaminated feces and through contact with contaminated objects. Unvaccinated dogs are at tremendous risk.
For the protection of all dogs, contact your veterinarian or a low cost clinic to have your dog vaccinated. If you plan to give up a dog to a shelter or rescue organization, have the dog vaccinated with the distemper/parvovirus combination seven days prior to relinquishment. Puppies should receive a series of three vaccines at two-week intervals if at all possible.
