News release from the TinCaps:
Padres’ First-Round Pick Promoted to Fort Wayne
Outfielder Hunter Renfroe Joins TinCaps
(August 10, 2013) – The Fort Wayne TinCaps, in conjunction with the San Diego Padres, announced the following roster moves today:
- Outfielder Corey Adamson transferred from Fort Wayne to Advanced-A Lake Elsinore.
- Outfielder Hunter Renfroe transferred from Short-Season-A Eugene to Fort Wayne.
The Padres selected Renfroe, 21, out of Mississippi State in the first round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft with the 13th overall selection. This past season for the Bulldogs, Renfroe hit .352 with 15 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs, 58 RBI, 51 runs scored, and nine stolen bases in 59 games played. Renfroe’s 15 home runs were tied for 14th most in Division I, as he earned All-American honors and led Mississippi State to their first-ever College World Series Finals.
After debuting with Eugene on July 11, Renfroe hit .308 in 25 games with 4 home runs and 18 RBI. On Tuesday, the Crystal Springs, Mississippi, native played in the Northwest League All-Star Game and came through with the game-winning hit in the ninth inning.
Dating back to 1999 when Fort Wayne began its affiliation with San Diego, Renfroe is the 23rd supplemental first round or first-round pick of the Padres to be sent to Fort Wayne. Recent notable first or supplemental first-round picks to play for the TinCaps include Donavan Tate (2011, 2012), Cory Spangenberg (2011), Jaff Decker (2009), Cory Luebke (2007, 2008), and Travis Jankowski (2012).
Renfroe replaces Corey Adamson, who hit .269 with 3 home runs and 36 RBI in 99 games with the TinCaps this season. The 21-year-old corner outfielder from Bullsbrook, Australia, becomes the sixth Fort Wayne player to receive a promotion within San Diego’s system in the last two months.
