TinCaps’ nine-game winning streak ends Wednesday

(June 12, 2013) – With bolts of lightning flashing in the distance throughout the game, the TinCaps’ season-long nine-game winning streak ended at Parkview Field on a stormy Wednesday night, as Fort Wayne lost to the Lake County Captains, 11-0.

Bryan Rodriguez (1-1), who started for the TinCaps, kept the Captains off the scoreboard for the first three innings on Military Appreciation Night. However, with two outs in the top of the fourth, Lake County (21-41) catcher Richard Stock hit a solo home run to right field to break the tie and give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Captains then took control with seven runs in the fifth, highlighted by a three-run homer by Joe Sever.

With Rodriguez out of the game after 4 and 2/3 innings and Matt Chabot on the mound, Lake County continued to pile on runs. Erik Gonzalez led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run that smacked off The Harrison beyond the left-field wall to extend the Captains’ lead to 9-0 at the time.

Lake County added to its advantage in the eighth inning with two more runs, including a solo home run for Leo Castillo. Meanwhile, 21-year old starter Dylan Baker (2-5) hurled 6 and 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. He limited the TinCaps to only two hits and struck out four. Josh Martin and Louis Head finished the game for the Captains, combining to allow just two base-hits in two innings.

Despite the loss, Fort Wayne remains only 2 and 1/2 games behind South Bend for first place in the Eastern Division. The Silver Hawks also lost Wednesday. The TinCaps already clinched a playoff berth Tuesday and have five games remaining in the season’s first half, while the Silver Hawks have four left.

Fort Wayne and Lake County complete their three-game series at Parkview Field on Thursday at 7:05. The TinCaps, who will be wearing special jerseys for Social Media Night, are set to start Walker Weickel against Luis DeJesus for the Captains. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com, and seen on XFINITY Channel 81.
