Anneke and her family recently moved to Fort Wayne from Grand Rapids, Michigan. When she was assigned a project to take a long exposure photograph, she naturally gravitated towards the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge in downtown Fort Wayne. Anneke says “the lights show something beautiful about Fort Wayne.”

Nicole Croy, Anneke’s photography teacher, says that “It’s a great opportunity to show her work and represent our area of the state.”

According to Congressman Marlin Stutzman’s office, each spring the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries.

Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol. The winner will also receive two free airline tickets compliments of Southwest Airlines to fly from Indianapolis to Washington, D.C. to attend the national reception. The theme for the 2013 Congressional Art Competition is An Artistic Discovery. Artwork accepted mediums are Paintings, Drawings, Collage, Prints, Mixed Media, Computer Generated Art and Photography. Each entry must be original in concept, design and execution.
