TinCaps Shut Out in Peoria

(May 5, 2013) Peoria, IL – Peoria Chiefs pitcher Tyrell Jenkins needed no help Sunday afternoon, limiting the Fort Wayne TinCaps to only three hits, as he pitched a complete game shutout, leading his team to a 1-0 win. The scoreless defeat marked the first time in 2013 that the TinCaps have been shut out.

Fort Wayne (16-12) picked up back-to-back hits by Maxx Tissenbaum and Jeremy Baltz in the first inning, but did not secure another base hit until the top of the ninth, with only one out to spare, as Baltz connected again. With a walk by Felix Cabrera in the third inning and those three hits, the TinCaps managed just four base runners the entire afternoon.

Peoria (12-12) starter Tyrell Jenkins turned in the first complete game of his four-year career. The former supplemental first-round draft pick had never pitched more than six innings prior to Sunday’s game in his 36 career games. Jenkins (1-2) needed 97 pitches, 63 of them for strikes, to complete his nine innings.

TinCaps starter Ruben Mejia (1-3) allowed four hits over his five innings of work. The game’s lone run came on a two-out RBI single from Chiefs catcher Casey Rasmus, who lofted a bloop single over the head of Fort Wayne first baseman Diego Goris. John Hussey pitched three innings of relief, allowing a leadoff single in the sixth, and then retiring the next nine batters successively.

The finale of the three game series is scheduled for 7:30 pm EDT Monday evening. The scheduled starters are Walker Weickel for Fort Wayne and Kyle Helisek for Peoria. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
