News release from the City of Fort Wayne:
Free event to showcase teen talent on May 25
Mayor’s Youth Engagement Council hosts “Almost Famous” event downtown
(April 30, 2013) – Mayor Tom Henry’s Youth Engagement Council will host its 3rd annual “Fort Wayne’s Almost Famous” event on Saturday, May 25, 2013 in the 900 block of Calhoun Street, between Washington Boulevard and Wayne Street.
The event — which runs from 7 to 10 p.m. — was created by the Council to give local teens a chance to showcase their talent, interact with their peers and enjoy downtown Fort Wayne.
The free evening of entertainment will include a display of talent by local teens — including live bands, dance groups, acoustic musicians and singers and other inspired performers. It will also include vendors with information of interest to teens.
The event is being organized and run by the Youth Engagement Council, which includes high school students from throughout the city.
The Mayor’s Youth Engagement Council (MYEC) is an all-teen, volunteer council dedicated to service-learning, leadership and engagement with peers in the Fort Wayne area. Members encourage the youth of Fort Wayne to become involved in their community through government and participation in community events.
“Involving our youth and encouraging them to engage their peers is essential to our community’s future,” said Mayor Henry. “I’m inspired by the drive, energy and commitment these students have to organizing events, doing community service and making our city a better place to live.”
Event organizers are also looking for additional sponsors, vendors and organizations highlighting information of interest to teens. Potential sponsors or vendors interested in participating should contact Karen Richards at 427-2146 or Kerri Przemielewski at 427-2724. Proceeds from the event will go to the Reclamation Project, www.thereclamationproject.org.
This year’s sponsors include: Hot 107.9, Sweetwater, University of Saint Francis, Parkview Health, Indiana Tech, Steel Dynamics and the Downtown Improvement District.
