URGENT – WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NORTHERN INDIANA
1130 AM EST MON MAR 4 2013

…WINTER STORM TO IMPACT THE AREA TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT…

A STRONG STORM SYSTEM CURRENTLY TAKING SHAPE ACROSS THE NORTHERN ROCKIES WILL APPROACH THE MIDDLE MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY BY EARLY TUESDAY. SNOW WILL OVERSPREAD THE AREA FROM WEST TO EAST TUESDAY MORNING AND WILL CONTINUE THROUGH LATE TUESDAY EVENING BEFORE DIMINISHING IN INTENSITY LATE TUESDAY NIGHT. A PERIOD OF A MIX OF SNOW AND SLEET IS ALSO POSSIBLE ON TUESDAY MORNING ESPECIALLY ALONG AND SOUTH OF ROUTE 30. THIS STORM IS STILL IN A DEVELOPING STAGE…AND SOME UNCERTAINTY REMAINS AS TO THE EXACT TRACK. HOWEVER…SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN EXCESS OF 6 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS NORTHERN INDIANA…NORTHWEST OHIO…AND PORTIONS OF SOUTHWEST LOWER MICHIGAN BY LATE TUESDAY NIGHT.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER…

* TIMING…LIGHT SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP AFTER SUNRISE TUESDAY MORNING. THE SNOW WILL PICK UP IN COVERAGE AND INTENSITY DURING THE MID TO LATE MORNING HOURS TUESDAY. THE PERIOD OF HEAVIEST SNOW IS EXPECTED LATE TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH A PORTION OF THE OVERNIGHT HOURS TUESDAY NIGHT. SOME SLEET MAY ALSO MIX IN WITH THE SNOW TUESDAY MORNING…ESPECIALLY SOUTH OF THE ROUTE 30 CORRIDOR.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS…STORM TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE BY LATE TUESDAY NIGHT.

* PERIODS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW WILL RESULT IN SNOW COVERED ROADS AND HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS.
