Personal Injury Accident
Alcohol Identified as Factor in Five-Vehicle CrashDate/Time: September 27, 2012 / 2:40 p.m.

On Thursday, September 27, 2012 at approximately 2:40 p.m. the Fort Wayne Police Department, Fort Wayne Fire Department, and Three Rivers Ambulance Authority responded to the intersection of Maplecrest Road and Evard Road reference a report of an automobile accident involving multiple vehicles. Additional information received indicated the possibility of parties trapped or pinned inside vehicles.
First responders arrived on the scene to discover five vehicles involved: four mini-vans and a passenger vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla. The Fort Wayne Fire Department made two extrications at the scene from mini-vans involved in the accident, and TRAA transported three persons to a local hospital with injuries. Of the three persons transported by paramedics, one person was determined to be in fair condition and two others in serious condition.
According to witnesses, the Toyota Corolla was travelling southbound on Maplecrest Road approaching the intersection at Evard Road where southbound traffic was stopped at a red/stop light. The Toyota Corolla failed to stop and struck the stopped vehicles. Three vehicles were towed from the scene.
The driver of the Toyota Corolla, a male adult, was transported from the scene in serious condition, and a blood-alcohol test administered at the hospital revealed a BAC of .52%. The driver remains hospitalized at this time. A short time before this crash occurred, this vehicle was the subject of an ATL (Attempt to Locate) by the Allen County Police because it had been reported to be a reckless driver.
Maplecrest Road was closed to traffic from St. Joe Center Road to Rothman Road while police documented the incident, and fire crews removed debris and cleaned up the gas that had spilled along the roadway. Traffic resumed along Maplecrest Road at approximately 4:30 p.m.
This incident remains under investigation with the City of Fort Wayne Police Department, and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. There is nothing further at this time.
