Barricade Investigation

Date / Time of Incident: September 2, 2012 / 12:26 am

Location of Incident: 1000 Home Avenue

Suspect: Male, age 30

On Sunday, September 2, 2012 at approximately 12:26 am, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a home in the 1000 block of Home Avenue. An adult male subject was involved in a disturbance in the home wherein he threatened to harm a person in the home and then made threats of suicide. When officers arrived the subject refused to comply with officers’ commands and retreated into the home. Two other adults safely fled the home just as police arrived. The suspect appeared several times within view of the responding officers and he was observed brandishing a knife. The Emergency Services Team (EST) and Crisis Response Team (CRT) were called to assist in the investigation.

A CRT negotiator established communication with the suspect and successfully maintained communication with him until he surrendered later that morning. The EST took the subject into custody without incident, and he was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.

During this nearly three-hour standoff, the suspect was observed with a knife and a crossbow, and he reported to officers that he had a firearm and began throwing fireworks at the officers who were on the perimeter of the scene. However, a firearm was not discovered during a subsequent search of the home. Several neighboring homes were evacuated during the course of this investigation. No injuries were reported at the scene.

This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department.
