Mayor Henry Reduces Pool Fees, Cooling Centers and Clean up Continue

In his on-going effort to help residents stay safe during this period of extreme heat, Mayor Tom Henry announces a reduction in fees at the City’s pools.

Beginning today, and continuing Friday and Saturday, the following fees will be in place at Northside, McMillen and Memorial park pools.

Children 12 and under – Free
Age 13 and over – $1

“With temperatures expected to reach the 100-degree mark for the next three days, residents should not take chances with the heat,” said Mayor Henry. “There is relief available at our pools and cooling centers around town. An overnight shelter is also being provided by the American Red Cross at the First Assembly of God Church on Washington Center Road. Working together, we are making significant progress in recovering from the storm; however, it is important for residents to know that they can take a break from the heat at our pools and cooling centers.”

Residents will only be allowed into the pools until they reach capacity, whether or not they plan to swim. Approximately 400 people will be allowed into Northside and McMillen pools at one time; Memorial Pool will only hold 200.

 

Splash Pads

Additionally, the City’s free splash pads have extended hours to accommodate residents during the heat wave. Splash pads at Buckner, Memorial, Shoaff and Kreager parks are open from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. The Waynedale and McCormick splash pads remain closed due to power outage issues.

Report Damage

Residents are reminded to report storm damage to the State of Indiana’s Department of Homeland Security at www.in.gov/dhs/. Click on the link “Report Damage from Severe Weather June 29, 2012”, in the middle of the page.

 

Debris Drop-off/Pick-up

For immediate disposal, residents are encouraged to take debris to one of four drop off sites:

[li]Parking Lot at the Conklin Pavilion at Shoaff Park[/li]
[li]Tillman Dump, which is west of the park entrance on Tillman Road[/li]
[li]City Biosolids Facility on Lake Avenue near Maplecrest Road (July 4, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.)[/li]

Curbside pickup will take place for several weeks. Curbside debris pick-up is not part of regular residential garbage pick-up. Crews from the Street and Parks departments along with contracted tree companies will pick up curbside debris. The debris should be left at the curb, but not in the street for collection. Residents should not place the debris in the ally.

A color-coded map is posted on the City’s website, showing residents the status of debris collection in their area. Residents should consult this map to know when to place debris at the curb.

 

Traffic Signals

All traffic signals are functioning today.

 

Important Numbers

To report sparking power lines, trees or light poles that have fallen and are blocking streets this weekend, residents should call 911.

To report trees from the park strip that have fallen and are partially blocking a sidewalk or street, residents should call 311 and leave a message.

To report a power outage, residents should call Indiana Michigan Power at 1-800-311-4634
