Paint Fire Hydrants for Improved Safety
Program Offers a Way for Neighborhood Associations to Earn Income
Associations in neighborhoods that receive water from City Utilities can earn money this summer by painting fire hydrants in their areas. City Utilities will provide the paint and the necessary tools and brushes, and will pay neighborhood associations $5.00 for each hydrant painted.
Keeping fire hydrants brightly painted helps the Fire Department spot hydrants when approaching a fire scene — particularly in rainy or snowy weather. The painting program also relieves City Utilities crews so they can focus on fixing and maintaining water lines. Perhaps most important for neighborhood associations, the program gives them a source of income and helps keep neighborhoods looking tidy.
Associations should contact City Utilities before they paint any hydrants and may participate in the program once in a five-year period. City Utilities will coordinate with a neighborhood representative and will deliver the “hydrant yellow” paint and wire brushes needed to prepare the hydrant surface for painting. Neighborhoods will need to supply their own paint brushes. After the association submits a list of the hydrants that have been painted, City Utilities will pay the association $5.00 for each hydrant. Payment will be made in the form of a check from City Utilities. The program runs from now through the end of September.
