News release from Friends of the Parks of Allen County:

The Friends of the Parks of Allen County present: Landscape Design as Democracy and City Planning
Featuring Andrea Wulf, author of Founding Gardeners

So much has been written about the Founding Fathers — their courage and conviction, their foibles and feuds — that one wonders what fresh perspective could be brought to the subject. British author Andrea Wulf answers with her educational and entertaining “Founding Gardeners: The Revolutionary Generation, Nature, and the Shaping of the American Nation”, the story of early America as seen through the lens of horticulture. Horticulture, you ask? Definitely, and Wulf connects plants with politics in her work, which focuses on three Virginia plantation owners (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison) and the holder of a small farm near Boston, John Adams. Wulf examines America’s origins through a new prism, and in so doing enriches Americans’ understanding of their heritage.

Tickets are $10 at the door for this event at the main Allen County Public Library downtown on Friday, March 9. An appetizer buffet will be provided by Splendid Fare along with a cash bar. Doors open at 6 pm and Andrea’s Lecture will begin at 6:30 pm. All proceeds will go directly to Friends of the Parks, to help advance their mission. For more information, call Robin Holley at 260-417-3804, email her at or visit Friends of the Parks Facebook page.

This event is part of a year-long celebration of Fort Wayne’s landscape legacy, based on its first city plan, the park and boulevard system designed in 1912 by noted landscape architect George Edward Kessler. For more information about the Park and Boulevard System, our speaker’s bureau and about the celebration please contact Robin Holley, Manager of the Friends of the Parks or Julie Donnell, President of the Friends Board.

The mission of The Friends of the Parks is to promote the stewardship and celebration of the scenic, historic and recreational resources of the parks and public spaces in Fort Wayne.
