IPFW Announces New Dean of Students
(April 4, 2011) – Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne’s (IPFW’s) Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs George McClellan is pleased to announce the appointment of Eric M. Norman, Ed.D., as the new Dean of Students. “We conducted a nation-wide search for this position and it produced an exceptional pool of candidates. The top five prospects were invited to IPFW for a rigorous series of on-site interviews and the search committee felt Eric had the kinds of experience, academic and professional background, and personal history that made him their first choice for the job,” said McClellan. He added, “I am grateful to the search committee, which was chaired by Bruce Busby, associate vice chancellor for academic success, for all their hard work during the search and selection process.”
Norman, who begins his duties later this month, comes to IPFW from the Office of the Dean of Students at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, La., where he has served as associate dean of students and director of the office of student advocacy and accountability since June 2006. Prior to that, he was director of fraternity and sorority life at Virginia Tech, where he was also an affiliated assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.
“I was drawn to IPFW by the vision and growth of the university. Other schools seek to increase their enrollment, but few are able to achieve the success that IPFW has accomplished in such a short period of time,” said Norman. “The size of the institution was just right and there is a nice combination of seasoned and emerging professionals from a wide variety of institutions. I felt an immediate familial connection with the folks from the search committee and I was very pleased to see that others I met during my campus interview were just as genuine and caring. Clearly, everyone here has a sincere desire to help students in their development. I am very excited to join this team and I cannot wait to get to work.”
Norman says he plans to get “quickly connected into the campus fabric” so he can understand and meet the needs of the campus community. He also says he “will continue to grow the connections between academics and life outside of the classroom.”
Norman received a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership in Administration and Policy and a Master of Education in Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education from the University of Delaware. He received a Master of Arts in Psychology, concentrating in counseling, from Washington College, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Delaware.
