Senators make friendly wager on Men’s NCAA Championship Game

News release from US Senator Richard Lugar:

Senators Lugar, Lieberman, Coats, Blumenthal Make Friendly Wager on Men’s NCAA Championship Game

(Washington, DC) – Senators Richard Lugar (R-IN), Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Dan Coats (R-IN) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) announced a friendly wager on tonight’s NCAA Men’s Championship Game, when the UConn Huskies take on the Butler Bulldogs in Houston, Texas.

Senators Lieberman and Blumenthal bet Senators Lugar and Coats several Pepperidge Farm products, including Swirl Breads and Dinner Rolls- baked with pride in Bloomfield, Connecticut – that Jim Calhoun and the Huskies will cut down the nets tonight at Reliant Stadium.

Senators Lugar and Coats have staked a case of Cousin Willie’s Popcorn from Ramsey Popcorn Co. in Ramsey, Indiana that Brad Stevens and the Bulldogs will be victorious.

Senator Lugar said: “The Butler Bulldogs, Coach Stevens and all of Butler University are shining examples of Hoosier scholastic and athletic pride. We should also mention Blue II as he has worked tirelessly for this momentous event as well. All of Indiana will be cheering for Butler University this evening. We are proud of our Hoosier basketball heritage. Go Dawgs!”

Senator Lieberman said: “Beginning with their swift and victorious campaign in the Big East Tournament, and through their convincing run to the Final Four, our UCONN Huskies are on an unstoppable hot streak. While I’m sure my Indiana colleagues would enjoy some delicious goods from Connecticut, I’m confident that Coach Calhoun will lead his extraordinary team tonight to yet another National Championship title.”

Senator Coats said: “Ten straight wins and a Big East conference tournament title make Kemba Walker and the UCONN Huskies a worthy adversary in tonight’s championship game. The 1954 Milan High School team, which inspired the movie Hoosiers, won a championship a year after reaching the Final Four, and the Hoosier state will be pulling for the Butler Bulldogs to do the same. The Butler Way – teamwork, unselfishness and discipline – has inspired a nation for a second straight season, and our state is grateful for this amazing team’s accomplishments and example.”

Senator Blumenthal said: “Second only to celebrating UCONN’s victory will be enjoying popcorn provided by my Indiana colleagues, and sharing it with other Huskies fans. Coach Calhoun and his incredible team have worked hard all season disproving doubts and overcoming odds. I am wagering some great Connecticut goods provided by a long standing Connecticut company that has opened a new plant and hired more people. While I commend the Butler Bulldogs on a hard-fought season, it’s clear that the Huskies are finishing with a win in Houston.”
