“We are one” rallies planned across Indiana for Monday
Events to honor MLK’s life, inspire Hoosiers to continue his work
(INDIANAPOLIS – April 1, 2011) – Thousands of Hoosiers from around the state will join millions of Americans from across the country this Monday to honor the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, who was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis where he was standing with sanitation workers demanding collective bargaining rights.
“We Are One” events are planned in communities across the nation to bring attention to how, 43 years later, the attacks on workers’ rights and middle class families continue. In Indiana, workers are fighting legislation under consideration in the General Assembly that are designed to take away their collective bargaining rights.
The following events will take place on Monday, April 4, 2011 and will feature a variety of civil rights, labor and community leaders.
Fort Wayne
“We Are One: Reaffirming the Dream” (speakers and march)
5:00 p.m.
A march and event featuring local civil rights, labor and community leaders will take place at the South end of the MLK Bridge in Headwaters Park (333 S. Clinton St.) in Fort Wayne beginning at 5:00 p.m. The march will begin at 5:15 p.m. and will be followed by a formal ceremony at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Indianapolis
“We Are One” Statewide Ceremony (speakers only)
2:00 p.m.
A ceremony featuring several speakers from civil rights, labor and community organizations from around the state and nation will begin 2:00 p.m. at the Indiana Statehouse ( 2nd Floor, North Atrium) and will conclude by 4:00 p.m.
Jeffersonville
“We Are One” Ceremony (speakers and march)
11:45 a.m.
Hoosiers in Southeast Indiana will take part in a ceremony in Jeffersonville beginning at 11:45 a.m. with a march from the Clark-Floyd Counties Convention and Tourism Bureau(305 Southern Indiana Ave.) to Warder Park (109 East Court Ave.). A formal ceremony featuring area civil rights, labor and community leaders will begin at approximately noon.
Kokomo
“We Are One” Ceremony
4:00 p.m.
A ceremony will be held at Foster Park (700 Superior St.) in Kokomo honoring the work of Dr. King. Area labor, community and civil rights leaders will be featured speakers.
South Bend
“We Are One: Respect Our Rights Rally” (speakers and march)
4:00 p.m.
A march honoring MLK’s 1968 action will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center (1044 W. Washington St.) and will conclude at the Morris Civic Plaza (211 N. Michigan) with a rally planned for 5:00 p.m.
Whiting
