IPFW Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. with Week of Events

(December 27, 2010) – Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a week of
celebrations. Beginning Tues., Jan. 11, the IPFW Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs will host three on-campus events focusing on the theme “IPFW and Beyond.” All events are free and open to the public.

  • Tues., Jan. 11 – Fireside Chat: “Race, Class, and Economics” Panel discussion with Ruby Cain, founder and executive director of Creative Training Excellence; Tom Lewandowski, president of the Northeastern Indiana Central Labor Council; and Bill Fletcher Jr., columnist for blackcommentator.com; noon to 1:15 p.m. in the IPFW Walb Student Union Fireside Lounge
  • Thurs., Jan. 13 – 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. Kickoff Celebration: “How Does the Dream Affect Me Now?” Ketu Oladuwa, leader of the Three Rivers Jenbe Ensemble; Chief Condra Ridley, community organizer and storyteller; Michael Patterson, managing editor of Frost Illustrated; and Charles Redd, community activist, will share personal accounts of living during the civil rights movement and what the dream means to them in 2011; noon to 1:15 p.m. in the IPFW Walb Student Union Ballroom
  • Tues., Jan. 18 – “Bringing the Community Together: A Discussion on Civility” Keynote speaker Bishop John R. Bryan, presiding  prelate of the Fourth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, will speak about bringing the community  together; Wilberforce University Choir will also perform; 7 p.m. in the IPFW Auer Performance Hall, Rhinehart Music Center. This  event is co-sponsored by the Turner Chapel and Gomez Temple African Methodist Episcopal Churches

All events are sponsored by the IPFW Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, Indiana-Purdue Student Government, and Wells Fargo.
