Press release from the Fort Wayne Community Schools:

FWCS graduation rate increases, remains higher than the state average

(December 20, 2010) – The Fort Wayne Community Schools graduation rate for the class of 2010 increased for the third consecutive year, remaining higher than the state average.

In 2010, FWCS’ graduation rate was 85.5 percent, higher than the state average of 84.1 percent and an increase from 2009, when the FWCS graduation rate was 83.2 percent.

“We are proud of the work going on in our schools to make sure that students reach graduation,” Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson said. “Outperforming the state average for three consecutive years demonstrates that Fort Wayne Community Schools is dedicated to making sure all students achieve at high standards. We have made significant investments in our high schools over the last several years, and we expect our graduation rates to continue to climb. Our work will not be done until each student graduates ready for life beyond high school. We believe we will get there.”

North Side and South Side high schools had the largest graduation rate increases with gains of 8 and 8.5 percentage points, respectively, and all high schools now have more than 80 percent of students graduating.

“These graduation rates are further evidence that our students have distinguished themselves from those urban districts whose failures dominate the national media and pop culture” said Mark GiaQuinta, President of the FWCS Board of School Trustees, speaking on behalf of the FWCS Board. “We congratulate our teachers and administration whose hard work continues to show such promising results. Our outgoing Board members can take pride in this improvement as the incoming Board accepts the challenge of maintaining the district’s momentum.”
