Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity celebrates continued support for affordable housing efforts in 2011 with $10.4 million in funding from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans announces $10.4 commitment to build Habitat for Humanity homes in 33 states across the country

(December 6, 2010) – Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity received $37,187 in funding to help build a house in Fort Wayne as part of Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity in 2011.

Nationally, Thrivent Financial announced a commitment of $10.4 million to Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity and its homebuilding program, continuing its support of Habitat’s mission for a sixth year. This funding will make the construction of 164 additional homes in 33 states possible.

In 2011, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, through its unique partnership with Habitat for Humanity International called Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, will surpass more than $150 million in its total commitment over six years to create affordable housing. Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity built four homes as part of that effort.

“The Thrivent Builds partnership has helped Fort Wayne Habitat increase the number of families served in our community,” said Justin Berger, Executive Director for Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity. “We are so grateful for Thrivent Financial’s support of our efforts to provide decent, affordable homes in partnership with families in need.”

“I try not to cry in public, but it is real hard not to, when you see what Habitat for Humanity does for the families purchasing their first home. I still remember buying my first. I had a good job and parents who provided support. I cannot imagine how some of the Habitat partner families have managed and struggled to build their lives and families. I am so glad that Thrivent Builds has helped the Fort Wayne community these past four years. It is God’s blessing,” said Ron Caron, Thrivent Builds coordinator.

While Thrivent Financial provides at least 55 percent of the funding for each Thrivent Builds home, local volunteers—many of them Thrivent Financial members and members of area Lutheran congregations—assist with construction and help raise additional funds.

Since its inception in 2005, Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity has helped more than 2,500 families in the U.S. and around the world achieve the dream of homeownership. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans continues to be one of the largest non-government supporters of Habitat for Humanity International. 629 E Washington Blvd., Fort Wayne, IN 46802 Phone: (260) 422-4828 Fax: (260) 424-9272 www.fortwaynehabitat.org

About Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity
Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)3 non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that uses volunteer labor to build simple, affordable homes through partnerships with low-income Allen County families. Once completed the homes are sold to the family with a $500 down payment and at no profit on a 20-year, interest-free mortgage. Because of volunteer involvement, the cost of a standard three-bedroom home is kept affordable at approximately $65,000, with the monthly mortgage payment around $350, which includes taxes and insurance. Mortgage payments are then reinvested in the community in the form of additional housing opportunities. For more information, visit www.fortwaynehabitat.org.
