ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division Holiday Enforcement Results

(November 30, 2010) – Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division personnel participated in Operation Pull Over Blitz #65, Safe Family Travel over the Thanksgiving holiday, November 24th-28th.

According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, two (2) people were killed in crashes on Indiana roadways during the 2009 Thanksgiving holiday period November 25th – November 30th. One of those fatalities was alcohol related. Additionally, neither of the two drivers killed in the fatal crashes were wearing a seat belt.

Safe Family Travel was a statewide, annual enforcement campaign that combined high visibility seat belt and impaired driving patrols. The two-week enforcement effort began on Friday, November 12th and concluded Sunday, November 28th.

Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division motor carrier inspectors and troopers worked throughout the holiday period focusing on commercial motor vehicle violations. Motor carrier inspectors focused on logbook violations for driver fatigue and mechanical violations. Troopers certified in commercial motor vehicle safety concentrated on crash causation factors linked to driver’s behavior: operating a motor vehicle while impaired, following too close, driver fatigue, failure to obey traffic control devices and improper lane change. Statistically these violations have a higher tendency of leading to a crash. Troopers also took enforcement action for drivers failing to yield the right of way to emergency vehicles, speeding trucks, and passenger vehicles.

The following information is the results of the enforcement patrols conducted from November 24th-28th:

  • Truck inspections: 211
  • Truck inspection violations: 330
