Budget Session organizes; lawmakers ready to tackle hot button issues

An e-mail from Indiana State Senators Tom Wyss (R-15th) and David Long (R-16th):

Budget Session Organizes; Lawmakers Ready To Tackle Hot Button Issues

(November 16, 2010) – Lawmakers gathered at the Statehouse today for a traditional Organization Day meeting, a time we use to ready ourselves for the upcoming work session. Many challenges lay ahead of us, and 2011 will be known as a “long” session, one in which we must formulate a balanced budget and still adjourn by April 29.

Today’s activities included ceremonial events, like the swearing-in of five new Republican senators – Jim Banks, SD 17; Doug Eckerty, SD 26; Ron Grooms, SD 46; Jim Smith, SD 45; and Jim Tomes, SD 49 – and setting the date we will reconvene, Wednesday, Jan. 5.

I am grateful for the opportunity to renew my oath as your state senator. I look forward to again helping Hoosiers in District 15.

Today additionally allowed time for lawmakers to discuss issues we’ll address this upcoming session.

Based on what we’ve heard from our constituents, these will be among the hot topics for 2011:

  • Protecting taxpayers and passing a balanced budget;
  • Encouraging economic growth and job creation;
  • Reforming education and putting students first; and
  • Developing a fair redistricting plan.

At this time and throughout the upcoming session, feel free to contact me regarding issues important to you and your family.
