Huntington University to host annual high school math competition

(HUNTINGTON, Ind. – October 22, 2010) – The annual Huntington University High School Mathematics Competition is scheduled for Oct. 27 in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts on campus.

Thirteen area high school teams will meet to compete for individual and team awards for their demonstration of mathematical abilities. The teams are comprised of Adams Central High School, Monroe, Ind,; Anderson Christian School, Anderson, Ind.; Ayersville High School, Defiance, Ohio; Delta High School, Muncie, Ind.; Fishers High School, Fishers, Ind.; Greenville Senior High School, Greenville, Ohio; Hamilton Southeastern High School, Fishers, Ind.; Clay High School, South Bend, Ind.; Southwood High School, Wabash, Ind.; St. Joseph’s High School, South Bend, Ind.; Tippecanoe Valley High School, Akron, Ind.; Warsaw Community High School, Warsaw, Ind.; and West Noble High School, Ligonier, Ind.

The mathematics competition is made up of three rounds. The first round is a 20-question written exam comprised of questions from algebra to calculus. Students can earn a total of 100 points for the exam. The individual round of the competition is made up of 10 questions. Students are given two minutes to complete each question. Students receive 10 points for correctly answered questions. The final round, the team round, adds points to the team score. Students are provided with a multi-task problem that is best solved through the cooperative efforts of the team. A total of 50 points is possible for the final round.

Dr. Yu Yan, assistant professor of mathematics, coordinates the competition. Megan Verhasselt, a junior mathematics major, is the student coordinator for the competition. The goal of the competition is to support and encourage the efforts of students seeking to achieve in mathematics.
