FWCS celebrates Red Ribbon Week
(October 21, 2010) – Several Fort Wayne Community Schools will recognize Red Ribbon Week with fun activities to encourage students to stay away from drugs.
The Red Ribbon Campaign was started by the National Family Partnership after drug traffickers in Mexico City killed DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. Using Red Ribbons is designed to present a unified and visible commitment towards creating a drug-free America. Congress and the President declared the last week in October (Oct. 23-31) as Red Ribbon Week.
Schools across the country, including those in FWCS, use Red Ribbon Week to reinforce the drug-free messages students are taught throughout the year.
- At Adams Elementary, 3000 New Haven Ave., students will have spirit days each day of the week. Monday is Wear Red Day; Tuesday is Hats off Against Drugs when students can wear hats to school; Wednesday, students will wear a shirt from their favorite team to Team up Against Drugs; Thursday, students will wear sunglasses to Shade Out Drugs; and Friday is Hugs not Drugs day when students will bring their favorite stuffed animal to school.
- The PTA at Arlington Elementary School, 8118 St. Joe Center Road, will provide red ribbons to students, and the school will have a special BMX assembly at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27.
- At Forest Park Elementary, 2004 Alabama Ave., spirit week will consist of Monday – Wear Red Day; Tuesday – PJ Day; Wednesday – Wacky Wednesday; Thursday – Hat Day; and Friday – costumes or Forest Park spirit wear.
- At Franke Park Elementary School, 828 Mildred Ave., students will celebrate being drug free during “Red Ribbon Week” by participating in various themes throughout the week, such as crazy hair day, stuffed animal day, hat/sunglasses day, fan day and spirit day.
- At Haley Elementary School, 2201 Maplecrest Road, students will take an anti-drug pledge and receive a certificate signed by Principal Nate Spicer. The student then can take it home have a parent sign it and bring it back for a treat. Students can also participate in spirit days. Monday is wear red and black day; Tuesday is backwards shirt day; Wednesday is red, white and blue day; Thursday is wear boots day as Haley Stomps out Drugs; and Friday is spirit day.
- The PTA at Holland Elementary School, 7000 Red Haw Drive, is hosting a week of events around the theme “Don’t Monkey Around with Drugs.” There will be a large bulletin board up in the hallway by the gymnasium with facts about smoking, alcohol use and other drug use. Each morning the announcements will include a fact from the bulletin board and share different ways to say no to drugs. Throughout the school there will be sentences written on bananas on how to say “no” to drugs and alcohol. If students can list 10 ways to say “no” by Friday then they will get a cool prize. Friday is wear red day, and students can donate $1 to Riley Children’s Hospital if they want to wear a hat.
- At Shambaugh Elementary School, 5320 Rebecca Drive, students will wear red on Monday. Each student will receive a red ribbon with the school mascot. Tuesday is pajama day, and each student will receive a Twizzler. Wednesday is team jersey day, and each student will receive a red pencil. Thursday is crazy sock day, and each student will receive a sticker. Friday is crazy hat day. Fifth-graders will receive a bracelet, and everyone else will receive a bookmark.
- The PTA at Washington Center Elementary School, 1936 W. Wallen Road, has a week’s worth of events planned. On Monday, all students will receive a “Drug Free” sticker. A number will be written on each sticker, and at the end of the day numbers will be drawn. T students with the matching numbers will receive a “Drug Free” water bottle. On Tuesday, students may wear their favorite team shirt or Wildcat spirit wear to show their support to be drug free for “Team Up Against Drugs Day.” On Wednesday, students will wear red to show their support to be Drug Free. On Thursday, students will support the statement, “We CAN Be Drug Free!” by bringing in canned food items. Each student will receive a “We CAN Be Drug Free” sticker. Items collected will be donated to Community Harvest Food Bank. On Friday, students will wear orange, black, or other Halloween themed shirts. Each student will receive a Halloween treat with a “Drug Free” theme.
- At Weisser Park Elementary School, 902 Colerick St., drug-free related announcements will be read each day. Students and staff will wear red on Tuesday and crazy or mismatched socks on Thursday. On Wednesday, the “Make a Difference Pledge” will be read during announcements and an individual copy will be given to each student. The week will wrap up on Friday with a dance.
