Lutheran Health Network Provides Free Glucose Screenings in November

(Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010) – Lutheran Health Network has six opportunities for anyone to be tested for diabetes throughout November, the national observance month for the disease. Diabetes educators will be available to answer questions or to discuss concerns.

In 2007, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 23.6 million people in the United States were living with diabetes and 5.7 million were undiagnosed.

The glucose screenings require a finger stick yielding results within one minute of testing. An eight-hour fast is preferred. The screening can be conducted without fasting, however, the results are more difficult to assess.

The screening at Lutheran Hospital will also provide the opportunity for patients with diabetes to trade in their old blood glucose monitor for a new one for free. Representatives from the major monitoring companies will be present to assist.

Basic diabetes education classes for adults are available on a regular basis at two Fort Wayne LHN facilities, Dupont and St. Joseph hospitals, by certified diabetes educators. CDEs have specialized training and experience in diabetes management. Also offered are prediabetes classes, insulin pump evaluation and training, a diabetes clinic for the medical management of diabetes, and individual training on meal planning, insulin administration, and glucose monitoring. Call (260) 425-3154 for more information.

Lutheran Children’s Hospital offers education and a clinic for pediatric patients. Parents or caretakers should call (260) 435-7427 for the pediatric diabetes clinic at Lutheran Children’s Hospital.

In addition, free diabetes support groups are provided at Bluffton-Regional Medical Center in Bluffton, Dupont Hospital in Fort Wayne, Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw, Lutheran and St. Joseph hospitals in Fort Wayne.
