From the Fort Wayne Curling website:

The Fort Wayne Curling Club wishes to announce our first major competitive event, The Fort Wayne Summerspiel! It will be held at the brand new Canlan Ice Sports facility in Fort Wayne, INDIANA on 2 of the 3 rinks that we have under 1 roof. Our brand new state-of-the-art facility is able to control humidity and ice temperature year-round. We have an awesome restaurant/bar overlooking all 3 rinks that will provide food and drink throughout the event. Meals are included in your entry fee. We can accommodate 48 teams and you will enjoy a wonderful couple of days of summertime curling and the great fellowship that we all enjoy through this wonderful game.

We anticipate running elite, beginner and open divisions, so everyone is welcome to participate. Our first 2 Learn-to-Curl sessions featured ice speeds of 23-24 seconds with consistent playing conditions. Our ice-making staff is committed to providing excellent conditions for curling in our multipurpose facility. Our stones were obtained from a curling club in southern Ontario and were utilized in many major competitions there. I would anticipate a good field for our event of 24-48 teams based on interest expressed with virtually no promotion so far (12 teams). Curlers from other clubs that have assisted us with our “Learn-to-Curl” events in June have spoken very highly of their experience here.

We are a 2 hour drive from Indianapolis, 3 hour drive from Detroit and Chicago, and 3.5 hours from Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. Direct flights to Fort Wayne are available from Minneapolis, Dallas and Atlanta. Connections through these hubs + Detroit, Chicago and Cincinnati are also available on a variety of airlines. For our friends in Ontario, we are a 3 hour drive from Windsor, 5 hour drive from London and 6.5 hours from Toronto (easiest travel is thru Sarnia, then I-69 from Port Huron, MI all the way to Fort Wayne).

One of Fort Wayne’s newest hotels, Hyatt Place, is offering reduced rates for our event … $89/night. Teams considering entry in the Elite Division should contact FWCC President Craig Fischer directly for additional details. The plan is to have an 8 team elite group (qualifying 4 teams for playoffs), a 32 team open division (qualifying 12 teams assigned to 3 events) and an 8 team Beginner’s Division (qualifying 4 teams). There will be 2 playoff rounds at 2 and 4 pm on Sunday, if the draw is filled with 48 teams.

As a competitive curler, I think that you will be surprised at the quality of this curling experience on arena ice, due mainly to facility design and commitment of our ice-making staff to producing curling-quality ice. I am still amazed by the ice speed here. Get an early start to your competitive season right here in Fort Wayne! We have strong local support from our Visitors and Conventions Bureau.

Please check out the event brochure below. Event details and hotel contact information are outlined there. Forward this communication to anyone you feel may also be interested in this event. Please contact us if you have questions. We look forward to seeing you in Fort Wayne this August!
