Statement from the Tom Hayhurst for Congress campaign:

Hayhurst is unanimous choice of 3rd District Democrats in Special Election Caucus
Elected Once, Elected Twice, Candidate’s Sole Focus Still Budget, Job Growth

With a unanimous victory in the 3rd District Democratic Party caucus on June 17, Dr. Tom Hayhurst, the Democratic 3rd District Congressional general election candidate, became the party’s 3rd District Congressional special election candidate. The caucus was triggered by the resignation of former Rep. Mark Souder.

“My whole life, I have worked to make the lives of others better,” said Hayhurst. “As a doctor and a member of the Fort Wayne City Council, I never asked what anyone’s political party was- I just worked to solve their problems and improve their lives. That’s the kind of independent, bipartisan 3rd District representative I’ll be in Congress.”

Held at Carroll High School in northern Allen County, Hayhurst secured a 97-0 first-ballot caucus victory over opponent Bobby Kern. The special election winner will fill the remainder of Souder’s Congressional term.

“These are tough times, and the difficult issues we face test us all,” observed Hayhurst. “Every ounce of our energy must be focused on turning the economy around and creating good jobs, and of equal importance, getting a handle on federal spending. Working across party lines, I’m ready to tackle these issues and more. That’s why I am running for Congress.”

Hayhurst brings his lifelong passion for serving humanity to his campaign. His dedication has been shown throughout his 30 years as a critical care physician in northeast Indiana and his efforts to help those in need as a co-founder and volunteer at several area free health clinics.

He served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force and achieved the rank of Major. When threats to local services arose, he rallied with others to start Veterans for Better Health Care. From the grassroots, he fought to retain essential services at our regional Veterans Hospital.

A roll-up-your-sleeves, citizen legislator, Hayhurst knows how to get things done, a skill he honed week in and week out as a three-term Fort Wayne City Council member, working to build stronger neighborhoods and a better community.

Both the general election and the special election will be held on November 2.

Hayhurst was chosen as the 3rd District Congressional candidate by Democratic voters during the May 4 primary election.
