Statement from Indiana State Senator Marlin Stutzman delivered at the Allen County Republican Headquarters in Fort Wayne yesterday:

My family and I have been in much prayer and sought much council in the past few days.

As you all know, a year and a half ago, my family and I decided to take a leap of faith and run a state-wide campaign against Senator Evan Bayh.  We ran because I believed that it was time to Change Washington, Not America.  I had served in the Indiana State House for several terms, but always seemed to trace the root of most of our problems straight back to Washington, D.C.  As I have stated time and time again over the past year, it’s time we enacted federal legislation and safeguards to hold our elected officials more accountable to the people they represent.  We need more transparency in government.  There are many ways to do this, but we must first elect representatives who will be a voice for the people and not for special interest groups or their own political ambitions.

It has been an honor to serve in both the State House and Senate, under the leadership of Governor Mitch Daniels and Lt. Governor Beck Skillman.  With much hard work, in spite of opposition and resistance from the other side, we have been able to put Indiana “on the map” when it comes to fiscal responsibility, by earning Indiana’s first ever Triple A credit rating.  We have cut the size of our state bureaucracy budgets by more than 20% statewide.  We have paid back our debts to schools and local units of government.  We have taken a $1 billion deficit and turned it into balanced budgets with a fully funded roads program for the next ten years, and we have done all of that without raising taxes!  I reject the idea that you have to spend your way out of a financial crisis!  The debt this country owes right now is impossible for us to comprehend.  We are maxing out the good credit passed on to us and purchased with the blood, sweat and tears of previous generations.  I refuse to be part of the first generation of Americans who spend our children’s and grandchildren’s money and leave them in debt to such countries as China, India and others.  It is immoral, and I cannot stand by and watch and do nothing.

Indiana is proof, that with the right kind of leadership, it can be done!  In spite of tough economic times, if we have the right people in office who will lead by finding innovative ways of solving problems, who will listen to the voters and be open to new ideas, we can solve these problems together!  We can build a brighter future for our children and grandchildren.

That is why, today, I am announcing my bid for the United States House of Representatives 3rd Congressional Seat in Indiana.

We must have strong, principled, accountable leadership in Washington, that will stand strong for Hoosier values and represent “We the People.”  We must return America to the founding principles contained in the Constitution.  It’s time to send authentic representatives to Washington who understand and have experience in small business, sound economic principles, the free market and solid traditional values.  As a farmer, small business owner, father and state legislator for the past eight years, I believe I am ready and prepared to meet this challenge.  Today, I ask you to join me, and unite behind the proud banner of the Constitutional, conservative ideals we all hold so dear.
