Additional bike parking, helmet sales available at Sunday afternoon game

(May 11, 2010) Continuing with local efforts to “ride your drive,” the Fort Wayne TinCaps in partnership with the City of Fort Wayne, Parkview Trauma Center, Men of Steel Racing and Blue Jacket Inc., encourage people attending the game Sunday, May 16 to bike to the ballpark. Additional bike parking and representatives from Parkview’s Trauma Center, including helmets available at cost, will be at the game.

“Biking to Parkview Field has always been a viable option,” said Michael Limmer, TinCaps Vice President of Marketing. “We’ve seen an increasing number of fans utilize the trails and bike-friendly lanes downtown to make their way to the ballpark. This event is an opportunity to raise awareness
about Fort Wayne’s increasing accommodations for all levels of bike enthusiasts.”

To accommodate the additional bicycles, a portion of the green parking lot on Brackenridge will be reserved for bicycle parking with new event-style bike racks. Additional racks will also be on the south entrance to Parkview Field.

The City partnered with Blue Jacket and Industrial Training Solutions to manufacture the new portable racks. Starting at 2 p.m. Sunday through an hour after the game, a portion of the green parking lot on Brackenridge will be reserved for free bicycle parking with the new racks.

Men of Steel Racing is helping with Bike to the Ballpark day. The USA Cycling-sanctioned club will be back at Parkview Field July 31 for the second annual Parkview Cycling Festival, which will bring competitive cycling to downtown Fort Wayne in a family-friendly atmosphere.

Bike to the Ballpark is part local efforts to encourage Fort Wayne residents to use their bicycles as transportation. In information gathered from the public, people identified downtown as the top destination to which they would like to ride.

In the past six months, the City has installed more than 100 bike racks downtown, including additional racks at Parkview Field. The City has scheduled a number of cycling awareness events in May, which is National Bike Month, including the second annual bike summit that took place Saturday, May 8, the Bike to the Ballpark event this Sunday, May 16, and the Bike to Work campaign Friday, May 21.

Tickets are required to attend Sunday’s game against the Lake County Captains and available for purchase for via the ticket box office, online at Box Score or by calling 482-6400.
