Press release from the Downtown GOP Club:
Downtown GOP Club to host Secretary of State Todd Rokita on January 20 at Allen County Republican Headquarters
The Downtown GOP Club of Fort Wayne will host Secretary of State Todd Rokita on January 20, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. at Allen County Republican Headquarters. Rokita will address the monthly luncheon group on his “Rethinking Redistricting” plan.
“We’re honored to have Secretary Rokita as our guest for our January meeting. I think he is someone who we might see many more great things from in the future.” said Renee Rousseau, President of the Downtown GOP Club. “We had 84 people at our Christmas Party in December. We’re expecting a great turnout at this event as well.”
According to Rokita’s website on his proposal, www.rethinkingredistricting.com, current line drawing for congressional districts, is in need of significant reform: “Reforming this process is critical to fair and accountable representation and more competitive elections. Without fairly drawn districts, incumbents or political parties can manipulate voters for their own advantage.”
Governor Mitch Daniels has also chimed in the proposal: “Hoosiers deserve districts that make common sense and keep communities together, not lines drawn by political party computers to protect incumbents and limit competition. Todd and I are firmly united on the goal of making Indiana a model of good government through a fair, nonpartisan redistricting.”
Casey Cox, moderator of the Downtown GOP Club indicated that the event is about educating fellow Republicans, and that the Club doesn’t focus exclusively on electioneering.
“We’ve determined that as a political organization, we feel a significant responsibility to have a strong civic component, and Secretary Rokita’s redistricting plan is something that should appeal to republicans, democrats, and independents. We feel a responsibility to learn about and discuss this important issue.”
The Downtown GOP Club is a monthly lunch and activity organization focused on political and civic engagement. It is an auxiliary organization of the Allen County Republican Party.
