72nd Polar Bear Plunge

For what I have down as the 72nd time, those crazy Polar Bears will take to the waters of the St. Joseph River tomorrow at 2 pm.

The festivities kick off with the singing of the National Anthem followed by a vigorous dash into the cold, dirty waters of the river off the boat ramp in Johnny Appleseed Park.

There are no official rules to this thing.  For some, merely dashing in and out constitutes the “plunge” while for others, full immersion for a couple of seconds does the trick.  No matter your preference, style or attire, all are welcomed.

I’d encourage those who plan on taking the plunge to consider allowing time to slip home and clean up before attending those after-plunge activities as the stench from the river can be a bit overpowering – even if for only a few seconds of exposure.
